1 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem,
2 saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”
3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him;
4 and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.
5 They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:
6 “‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’”
7 Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared.
8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.”
16 Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men.
イエズスはヘロデ王のとき、ユダヤのベトレヘムでお生まれになった。そのころ東の国の博士たちがエルザレムに来て、「お生まれになったユダヤの王様はどこにおいでになるのか。我々はその星がのぼるのを見たのでおがみに来た。」と尋ねた。これを知ってヘロデ王はひどくうろたえた。エルザレムの人々も皆、同じことだった。そこでヘロデ王は祭司長たちと民間の律法学者たちを皆呼んで、キリストはどこに生まれるはずなのか。」と尋ねた。かれらは「ユダヤのベトレヘムに生まれるはずであります。それは預言者が次のように書いているからです″ユダの地ベトレヘム、おまえはユダの村々の中で最も小さなものではない。なぜなら、我が民イスラエルを牧するかしらが出るからである。″とあります。」と答えた。
それからヘロデはひそかに博士たちを呼び、星のあらわれたときのことをくわしく聞きただしてから、「行ってこまかに子供のことをたずね、見つけたら私に知らせてくれ。私も行って、その子をおがもう。」といって、かれらをベトレヘムに送った。ところがその後、新しい王の誕生をおそれたヘロデは、ベトレヘムとその付近にいる二才以下の男の子を皆殺しにしようとして家来を送った。
