2 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.
3 You have multiplied the nation; you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as they are glad when they divide the spoil.
4 For the yoke of his burden, and the staff for his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian.
5 For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult and every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for the fire.
6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
闇を歩む民は、大いなる光を見た。闇につつまれた地に住む者に、光が輝いた。あなたは、深い喜びと、大きな楽しみを、お与えになった。彼らは、み前で喜んだ。刈り入れの時のように、戦利品を分け合うように。あなたは、彼らの負う軛と、肩を打つ杖と、虐げる者の鞭とを、マディアンの日に、なされたように、折られた。戦いに履いた履物と、血にまみれた着物は、火にくべられて、焼き尽くされる。私たちのために、ひとりのみどり子が生まれた。ひとりの男の子が、与えられた。その肩には、王のしるしがある。その名は、「優秀な顧問、力ある神、永遠の父、平和の君」と、唱えられる。彼の治める所は、広大、限りなき平和のうちに。彼は、ダヴィドの王座を、その国を、慈悲と正義とをもって、いまも、いつまでも、かため、つよめられる。万軍の主のもえる愛がこれを成し遂げる。
17 I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near: a star shall come out of Jacob, and a scepter shall rise out of Israel; it shall crush the forehead of Moab and break down all the sons of Sheth.
私には見える、だが今ではない。私は仰ぎ見る、だが間近ではない。ヤコブから、ひとつの星が昇り、イスラエルから、ひとりの人が立ち上がる。
2 But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days.
3 Therefore he shall give them up until the time when she who is in labor has given birth; then the rest of his brothers shall return to the people of Israel.
4 And he shall stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God. And they shall dwell secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth.
そして、エフラタの地のベトレヘムよ、お前は、ユダの村々の中で、最も小さい者だが、お前の中から、私のために、イスラエルを治める者が出る。その出は、ずっと以前、昔の日々にさかのぼる。それゆえ、主は、生む者が、生む時まで、イスラエルを打ち捨てておかれる。その後、兄弟の残りの者が、イスラエルの子らのもとに、立ち戻る。彼は、主の威光をもって立ち、神である主の、み名の権威をもって、その羊の群れを、牧される。彼らは、安らかに住みゆく。今や、その勢力は、地の果てまで、伸ばされるからである。
